Response to mass shooting"Hostile events" have many names: active shooter, mass shooting, workplace violence, terrorism (international and domestic).  And it's in the news more frequently than ever.  Reasons for violence range from ideological differences, domestic problems, disgruntled employees, to mental illness.  Whatever the label, hostile events pose an increasing risk in our society.  Use the toolbar to find specific information on what you can do to increase awareness and reduce risk.
Workplace violence is defined as any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site.  Domestic violence can also occur at the work site.

Terrorism includes not only acts by foreign groups, but also acts of domestic terrorism. The USA Patriot Act defines domestic terrorism acts as those which: "(a) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; (b) appear to be intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and (c) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States."

The Department of Homeland Security has a "See Something, Say Something" campaign that 'raises public awareness of the indicators of terrorism and terrorism related crime, as well as the importance of reporting suspicious activity to State and local law enforcement."
