Flood Mitigation

Homeowners, Businesses, Renters
Move valuables and appliances out of the basement of your home or business if it is prone to flooding. If unable to move appliances like the furnace or water heater, consider elevating them on pads to reduce the likelihood of damage from minor flooding or water leak.  Consider the use of sump pumps, check valves and backflow prevention devices. If you have a sump pump, check your homeowner's insurance policy to ensure it covers sump pump failure or if a special rider is needed.

Secure yard items or stored objects that may otherwise be swept away, damaged or pose a hazard if floodwaters would pick them up and carry them away,

Normal homeowner/renter/business insurance policies do not cover flooding. You can purchase flood insurance through the NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) if you live in a community that participates in the NFIP.  Plan ahead as there is typically a 30-day waiting period for an NFIP policy to go into effect.  You can learn more about this insurance in one of the following ways:

  • Contact your local insurance agent to see if they sell flood insurance
  • Visit FEMA's website or Floodsmart.gov for information on the National Flood Insurance Program including how and where to purchase it.
Municipalities:
Flood mitigation can involve installing, re-routing, or increasing the capacity of a storm drainage system that may involve detention and retention ponds, drainage easements, or creeks and streams.

Maintain drainage systems to include sediment and debris clearance.

Prevent/discourage discharges into storm-water/sewer systems from home footing drains, downspouts and drainage.

In addition to planning for traffic control during floods, there are various construction and placement factors to consider when building roads, such as placement, ponding, culvert size, etc.
