Amateur Radio Emergency Service/Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (ARES/RACES) is comprised of amateur radio operators dedicated to serving their community in times of crisis. When there is a need for enhanced or supplemental communications in a crisis, such as natural or technological disaster, RACES provides valuable technical expertise, radio operators, and equipment to assist local communities and responders. Many amateur radio operators are also trained weather spotters that provide critical "ground truth" reports to the National Weather Service.
