What is Carbon Monoxide? Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death. It's produced when fuels such as gas, propane, kerosene, or wood are burned. Since you can't see or smell it, dangerously high levels can be reached before you even realize it's present in your home, garage or workplace.

Signs & Symptoms It's important to know the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Take immediate action if you experience any of the following symptoms and believe that they could be related to CO exposure.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors Having a carbon monoxide detector in your home is a must. Be sure to check it often to ensure it's working correctly. CO detectors should be replaced every five years or according to the manufacturer's instructions. Every home in Wisconsin needs to have a carbon monoxide detector on each floor, including the basement. Attic and storage areas are not required by state law to have a detector. If the detector goes off, get fresh air right away and call the fire department. Do not go back into the building until your home is inspected and declared safe.
