In 2019 Anne Bartels, Education Specialist, started the Pollinator Invitation Garden (P.I.G.) program to educate locals about the importance of native plants and pollinators and to increase pollinator habitat throughout the county. She started in 2019 with school garden plantings at Crivitz Elementary and Wausaukee Schools, as well as at the Goodwill Possibilities in Marinette. This program really flourished during 2020-2021 due to COVID - about 37 residential households/organizations participated. Another goal during COVID was to help improve mental and/or physical health of participants through gardening and interaction with nature. This program provided participants with native plants to start or improve their pollinator-friendly gardens as well as educational resources about native plant gardening. Many public places like Stephenson Public Library, Marinette County Courthouse, Marinette Rec Center, UW Green Bay Campus, Red Arrow Park, Stephenson Island, organizations like the YMCA and Boys & Girls Club, and churches in the area have planted native gardens with Anne's help.
