The Wildlife Damage Abatement and Claims Program (WDACP) is a 100% state funded program designed to provide relief to farmers who are experiencing damage to their crops from the presence of wildli fe in Marinette County. The WDACP provides abatement measures to farmers experiencing damages and compensation for lost crops, should abatement measures fail. All monies used for program administrative costs, abatement costs, and claims payments are derived from the sale of bonus permits as well as a $1 surcharge on hunting licenses sold.
Currently, only damage caused by Whitetail deer, black bear, wild turkeys, and Canada geese is eligible for abatement and claims services. However, the WDACP is always changing to fit the needs of farmers and the interests of sportsmen. Some possible additions to the list of eligible species include raccoons and Sandhill cranes.
In order to participate in the WDACP, potential enrollees must meet numerous program requirements. One of the main program requirements is the acceptance and implementation of all abatement methods prescribed by the Marinette County WDACP Coordinator. Though abatement methods vary depending on each individual situation and species involved, the most common abatement methods are agricultural deer damage shooting permits and providing hunting access during gun and bow seasons in order to harvest deer, which cause the vast majority of damage in Marinette County.
The list of farmers enrolled in the WDACP in Marinette County is available for those interested in harvesting animals causing crop damage, particularly antlerless Whitetail deer. The inception of the Hunt for the Hungry/Deer Donation Program has given hunters a very good reason to harvest antlerless deer. Follow the above link to find out how easy it is for you to help feed the needy in Northeast Wisconsin while also helping to control herd numbers.
