Hunt for the Hungry ~ Wisconsin Deer Donation Program

In the year 2000, legislation was passed in the state of Wisconsin that allowed for a portion of the Wildlife Damage Abatement and Claims Program funding to be used to pay for the processing of venison that would be donated to food pantries.

Marinette County chose to coordinate its Wisconsin Deer Donation program with the Hunt For The Hungry program, a non-profit organization already in operation in Northeast Wisconsin. Over the first 2 years of the program, 261 deer have been donated o the HFTH/WDD effort in Marinette County. All deer that are donated are ground into hamburger and transferred to local food pantries for distribution to the less fortunate. Please follow these simple steps if you harvest a deer that you would like to donate to the Hunt for the Hungry/Wisconsin Deer Donation effort:

  • Properly tag, field dress, and register your deer. If it is over 40 degrees at the time of harvest, please place a bag of ice in the chest cavity and another bag of ice between the hind quarters to ensure proper cooling.

  • Drop off the whole deer at one of our participating processors.

  • Sign the donation log at the processor

  • Thats it! You have just helped to feed the less fortunate in the local community while actively managing your deer herd!

Since March of 2002, hunters can choose to donate $1.00 to the HFTH/WDD Program when they purchase their deer license. Please consider donating when you purchase your license in order to help fund this very worthwhile program that benefits your local community.
